Director of Safety

The Director, Safety is responsible and owns the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of fit for purpose safety strategies, programs, standards, processes, and systems to support rapidly evolving operations in a distributed network of facilities. The focus will be on building scalable, risk-based procedures and systems to elevate the organization's HSE maturity to industry-leading standards.

  • Develop and execute a forward-thinking multi-year safety strategy in collaboration with internal stakeholders; align safety objectives with business goals to enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance to instill a safe operations culture throughout the organization. Engage with executive leadership, managers, and frontline employees to cultivate a shared commitment to safety excellence and continuous improvement, integrating human and organizational performance (HOP) across all lines of businesses.
  • Establish and implement a scalable EHS Management System to support the rapid growth and evolution of our company; drive the organization's HSE maturity to industry-leading standards.
  • Develop, implement and manage a strategic road map that is based on incremental improvement to attain a level of maturity that is industry leading.
  • Lead EHS regional directors and/or site leads to execute on proactive safety engagement; ensure standards and processes are integrated into all operational processes.
  • Lead the development and implementation of risk-based approaches to identify, assess, and mitigate HSE risks. Leads safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and risks.
  • Develop and implement proactive measures to reduce serious injuries and fatalities (SIF) and occupational hazards through use of data analytics and reporting.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to managers and all facility-level staff regarding compliance.
  • Create regular safety performance reviews and committee(s) framework
  • Establish robust KPIs and reporting metrics with leading and lagging indicators to proactively address risk factors.
  • Lead cultural change to embrace new and improved safety programs and policies at all levels of the organization; through effective communication and leadership
  • Drive robust incident reporting mechanisms, conduct thorough investigations, and identify root causes and effective corrective actions.
  • Responsible for development of comprehensive risk assessments and hazard analyses programs and tools to identify potential safety hazards and mitigate associated risks. Implement risk control measures, safety protocols, and engineering controls to minimize exposure to hazards.

  • Accountable to ensure appropriate and timely regulatory reporting
  • Continually monitor developments, trends, legislation and regulations and evaluate the impact on business operations; proactively update EHS Management System and advise the business accordingly
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant HSE regulations and standards.
  • Interfaces with federal, state, and local regulators during audits, reviews, and/or to proactively ensure compliance with requirements

  • Engage with employees at all levels to promote a proactive and positive safe operations culture.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve safety programs to ensure they meet the needs of the business.
  • Serve as an influencer and advocate for safety initiatives, building strong relationships across the organization.
  • Provide thought leadership and inspire change at all levels in the organization with intensity and integrity. Remove barriers through effective problem solving and coordination with internal partners.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in safety management
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering or a related field preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA regulations and industry specific guidelines.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision making skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to influence and engage teams at all levels.
  • Expertise in regulatory compliance and safety standards.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning capabilities.
  • Exceptional leadership, mentoring, and team-building skills.
  • Proficiency in safety-related software and data analysis tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Travel +/- 50% annually, depending on office location.
